About Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves is an action-adventure multiplayer game developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was released on March 20, 2018, for Xbox One and Windows 10 via the Microsoft Store. Enhanced versions for Xbox Series X/S arrived in March 2024, and PlayStation 5 support followed on April 30, 2024. Sea of Thieves was one of the first Xbox Game Pass titles available at launch.
The game places players in the role of a pirate in a shared open-world sea populated by other crews. Teams of up to four sail between islands, completing voyages, hunting sea monsters, seeking treasure, and crossing paths with rival players. Three ship types suit different crew sizes: the Sloop for one or two players, the Brigantine for two or three, and the Galleon for three or four. Each ship requires coordinated crew management of sails, anchor, navigation, cannons, and hull repairs.
Trading companies provide the foundation of play. The Gold Hoarders send crews to dig up buried chests using treasure maps. The Order of Souls offers bounties on skeleton captains. The Merchant Alliance tasks players with transporting goods and animals between islands. Selling loot earned from these activities raises reputation with each company and unlocks cosmetic rewards for ships, weapons, and pirates.
Tall Tales form the game's story mode: a series of narrative quest chapters with their own characters, puzzles, and lore that reward longer-form engagement. Seasonal updates continuously add new content, events, and cosmetic progression. All player progression in Sea of Thieves is cosmetic. No gameplay advantages are locked behind paid content, meaning every crew competes on equal terms regardless of time played or money spent.
