The game is set in late 1500s Japan during the Sengoku period, a time of relentless clan warfare. Players control Sekiro, known as the One-Armed Wolf, a shinobi left for dead after failing to protect his young lord. With the lord captured by the Ashina clan, Sekiro sets out to rescue him on a journey that spans feudal villages, mountain fortresses, and ancient temples.
Combat is built around a posture system that distinguishes Sekiro from FromSoftware's previous work. Every enemy and boss has a posture meter that rises when attacks are deflected or absorbed. When the meter fills, a deathblow becomes available that kills the target regardless of remaining health. Precisely deflecting incoming attacks is the game's central skill, and players must learn to read each enemy's timing and patterns rather than manage stamina. Dodging remains available, but deflection is the more rewarding and efficient approach.
Sekiro's prosthetic arm holds interchangeable tools including a grappling hook, shuriken launcher, axe, and flame vent, each suited to different enemy types and encounters. The grappling hook enables traversal between elevated positions and adds a vertical dimension to exploration throughout the world.
The game is single-player only, with multiple endings available depending on choices made throughout the story. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice holds a Metacritic score of 88.
