About Sid Meier's Civilization VII
Sid Meier's Civilization VII is a 4X turn-based strategy game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K. It was released on February 11, 2025, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It is the seventh main installment in the Civilization franchise, following Civilization VI (2016).
The game is built around a three-Age structure that divides each playthrough into the Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern Ages, each governed by its own distinct technology and civics trees. At the transition between Ages, players choose a new civilization to lead into the next era, allowing a single ruler to guide multiple distinct societies across the full span of history. This system enables a range of strategic decisions centered on which civilization best complements each leader's abilities and the direction of the current game.
Leaders are decoupled from civilizations for the first time in the series. Historical figures such as Augustus, Benjamin Franklin, and Amina of Zaria can lead any compatible civilization, with each leader carrying unique abilities that interact differently depending on the civilization chosen. Personas, alternate versions of leaders with distinct bonuses and appearances, add further variety.
The Ages system changes how technology and progression work across the game. Rather than one continuous tech tree spanning all of history, each Age has its own tree, with progress on one feeding into advantages at the start of the next. New mechanics introduced in Civilization VII include navigable rivers for trade and movement, army commanders that allow multiple units to move and attack as one formation, and a Legacy system that carries progression bonuses earned in one playthrough into future sessions.
Multiplayer supports up to eight players in the Modern Age with cross-platform play across Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC. An overhauled tutorial system is designed to lower the barrier for newcomers to the strategy genre. Post-launch content has continued through paid Content Collections, each adding new leaders and civilizations. Sid Meier's Civilization VII holds a Metacritic score of 79.
