Freedom Of Expression - Skater XL’s physics-based controls don’t have any pre-programmed tricks - only the movement through the thumbsticks. Each thumbstick is connected to the corresponding foot of the skater and as the player moves the stick, the board instantly responds. About Skater XL
Skater XL is a physics-based skateboarding simulation game developed and published by Easy Day Studios, a studio based in Long Beach, California. It entered Steam Early Access on December 19, 2018, and left Early Access on July 28, 2020, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch version following in December 2023.
The game's Independent Foot Control system ties each thumbstick to one of the skater's feet, letting the board respond directly to stick movement instead of triggering pre-set tricks. There are no built-in trick lists to memorize; every kickflip, grind, or manual is created through the player's own stick input, closer to playing an instrument than pressing a combo. This gives the game a genuine learning curve, since results depend entirely on how precisely the sticks are moved rather than timing a canned animation.
Levels are inspired by real-world skate spots, including a Downtown LA map built around landmarks like the Staples Center and LA Convention Center, the sprawling Easy Day High School campus with spots like the Wallenberg Big 4 and The Big Ramp, and a massive vert structure for airborne tricks. Community-created maps such as Grant Park, Hüdland, and Streets have also been folded into the official rotation over time. Players can skate as themselves, with a deep customization system covering gear from more than 30 real skate brands including Vans, Santa Cruz, and Independent, or select one of four real-life pro skaters, each with their own signature gear.
Multiplayer Free Skate lets up to ten players link up online, skate together, and capture replays as a group with progressive difficulty give players goals to chase outside of open free skating. A large modding community, supported through the official Skater XL modding hub, has built custom maps, gear, and tools around the game, backed by one of the largest Discord communities in gaming at the time of its Early Access run.
