About SOMA
SOMA is a sci-fi survival horror game developed and published by Frictional Games, the Swedish studio behind Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra series. It was released on September 22, 2015, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, macOS, and Linux, with an Xbox One version following on December 1, 2017. A Nintendo Switch port developed by Abylight Studios was released on July 24, 2025.
The story is set in the year 2104, when a comet has devastated Earth, leaving PATHOS-II, an isolated underwater research facility, as one of the last remaining pockets of human activity. Simon Jarrett, who underwent a brain scan for a medical condition, wakes up in this far-future facility with no memory of how he got there. As he explores PATHOS-II, Simon discovers that the WAU, an AI system meant to keep the facility's inhabitants alive, has taken increasingly extreme and unsettling measures to fulfill its directive, blurring the line between human and machine in ways that force Simon and the player to confront deeply unsettling questions about consciousness, identity, and what actually makes someone a person.
Gameplay builds on the conventions Frictional Games established with Amnesia, emphasizing stealthy evasion of hostile creatures, environmental puzzle-solving, and full immersion. However, SOMA deliberately moves away from traditional inventory management in favor of a tighter focus on narrative and character development. Players have no weapons and must rely entirely on avoidance and problem-solving to survive encounters with the facility's corrupted humans, twisted creatures, and unpredictable robots. A Safe Mode, added roughly two years after the original launch, removes the threat of death from monster encounters entirely, letting players focus purely on the story and atmosphere without the pressure of stealth failure.
SOMA received widespread critical praise for its story, atmosphere, sound design, and voice acting, though its monster encounters drew more mixed reactions, with some critics feeling the small number of enemy types and largely one-off appearances made them feel underused compared to the strength of the narrative. A spiritual successor from Frictional Games, titled Ontos, is set to release in 2027. SOMA holds a Metacritic score of 84 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.

No. SOMA is a fully standalone story with no connection to the Amnesia series beyond sharing the same developer and some overlapping gameplay conventions. No prior knowledge of Frictional Games' earlier titles is needed to follow or enjoy it.
No. Players have no weapons throughout the game and must rely entirely on stealth and avoidance to survive encounters with the facility's hostile creatures.
Safe Mode is an optional setting added roughly two years after the original release that removes the possibility of death from monster encounters. Players can still be caught and interact with threats, but the game continues regardless, letting them focus on the story and atmosphere without the pressure of failing a stealth section.
A single playthrough takes roughly 9 to 12 hours, depending on exploration pace and how much of the game's optional lore, found through notes and audio logs, players choose to seek out.
