About Sonic Superstars
Sonic Superstars is a side-scrolling platformer developed by Arzest, a studio founded by Sonic co-creator Naoto Ohshima, in collaboration with Sonic Team, and published by Sega. It was released on October 17, 2023, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Development began in 2021 with a deliberate focus on replicating the physics and feel of the Sega Genesis Sonic games, with the team cross-referencing footage from the original titles throughout production.
The story is set on the Northstar Islands, a location entirely new to the franchise, where Doctor Eggman has hired bounty hunter Fang the Hunter to help him turn the island's wildlife into robotic Badniks in his ongoing pursuit of world domination. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy travel to the islands to stop him, encountering a new character, Trip the Sungazer, along the way. Like the classic Genesis titles, the story is told entirely through gameplay and character actions rather than dialogue or text.
Twelve zones make up the campaign, each split into one or two acts, mostly ending in a boss fight. Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds unlocks Emerald Powers, a new mechanic that grants each character a special ability rather than the traditional full Super Sonic transformation, drawing inspiration from the Wisp powers introduced in Sonic Colors. Sonic remains the only character who can transform into Super Sonic upon collecting all seven Emeralds, while the other playable characters instead become "Superpowered."
For the first time in the series, Sonic Superstars introduces four-player local and online co-op, letting up to four players tackle levels together as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy simultaneously. A separate Battle Mode lets players compete in minigames using robotic Metal Fighter characters within one of Eggman's secret labs.
