About South Park: The Stick of Truth
South Park: The Stick of Truth is a role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment in collaboration with South Park Digital Studios and published by Ubisoft. It was released on March 4, 2014, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, following a turbulent development period that saw original publisher THQ file for bankruptcy in 2013, with Ubisoft stepping in to acquire and complete the publishing rights. Trey Parker and Matt Stone were closely involved throughout, writing the script, guiding the game's design, and voicing many of the characters themselves, a level of creative control unusual for a licensed game.
The story begins with the New Kid moving to South Park with their family and quickly getting drawn into an elaborate fantasy role-play war being waged by the town's kids over the Stick of Truth, a powerful artifact fought over between the Kingdom of Kupa Keep, led by Cartman, and the Elves, led by Kyle. What starts as a childhood game escalates dramatically, pulling in Nazi zombies, aliens, and other increasingly absurd threats that put the whole town at risk. Players customize their own character and recruit classic South Park characters, including Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny, to join the fight.
The game is presented from a 2.5D perspective built to precisely replicate the show's flat, cardboard-cutout animation style, with divergent paths letting players move into the foreground or background while preserving that visual look. Combat is turn-based with a timing component layered on top, similar in structure to the Paper Mario series, rewarding well-timed inputs with stronger combos and more effective defending. Weapons can be upgraded with elemental and gross-out effects, and a summoning system lets players call in characters like Jesus and Mr. Slave for combat assistance.
South Park: The Stick of Truth holds a Metacritic score of 85 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam, the game is also available through Ubisoft+ Classics, included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
