About Split Fiction
Split Fiction is a co-op action-adventure game developed by Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on March 6, 2025, for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following on June 5, 2025. The game was directed by Josef Fares, who previously directed A Way Out (2018) and It Takes Two (2021), with the latter winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021.
The story follows Mio and Zoe, two aspiring writers with very different sensibilities. Mio writes grounded science fiction while Zoe writes sweeping fantasy. Both arrive at the Rader Corporation hoping to have their ideas published through its simulation technology, and both end up trapped inside a machine designed not to publish their work but to steal it. Thrown together into the same simulation, they must travel through the worlds they each created and find a way to escape while uncovering the truth about the corporation and each other.
Split Fiction is strictly a two-player cooperative experience. Both players have distinct abilities tied to their character, and the game requires both to work together to solve puzzles, navigate environments, and push through its interconnected worlds. New gameplay mechanics are introduced consistently throughout the campaign, with each section offering fresh systems rather than repeating the same ideas across the full runtime.
The game supports crossplay between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. A Friend's Pass means only one player needs to own a copy: the second player downloads the Friend's Pass for free on their platform and joins via invitation. Both console versions run at 60fps. Split Fiction holds a Metacritic score of 91.

The Friend's Pass allows one player who owns Split Fiction to invite a second player to join the full game for free. The second player downloads the Friend's Pass on their platform at no cost and can play the entire campaign together with the owner. Only one copy of the game needs to be purchased for two people to play. The Friend's Pass works across platforms, meaning an Xbox owner can invite a friend on PlayStation or PC.
No. Split Fiction is exclusively a two-player cooperative experience and cannot be played solo. The entire campaign is built around two players working together, with both characters required at all times.
Yes. Split Fiction supports full crossplay between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Two players on different platforms can play together without any restrictions.
Split Fiction and It Takes Two are not narratively connected but share the same developer, publisher, and director. Both games are two-player co-op experiences from Hazelight Studios and Josef Fares, with similar design philosophies centered on cooperative gameplay, rapidly changing mechanics, and relationship-driven storytelling. Players who enjoyed It Takes Two will find the same creative energy in Split Fiction, though with a different story and setting.
