About Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)
Star Wars: Battlefront II is a first and third-person shooter developed by Pandemic Studios and published by LucasArts. It was released on November 1, 2005, for PC, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable, with the release date coinciding with the DVD release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. It is the sequel to 2004's Star Wars: Battlefront and the second entry in the original Battlefront series.
The campaign, titled Rise of the Empire, follows a clone trooper veteran of the 501st Legion as the unit transitions from Republic Clone Troopers into Imperial stormtroopers known as Vader's Fist. Mission-based objectives are drawn from across Episodes I through VI, retelling key moments of the Star Wars saga from a soldier's perspective rather than the more open conquest-style structure of the original game.
Battlefront II expands significantly on its predecessor's gameplay. For the first time in the series, players can take direct control of Jedi and Sith heroes such as Yoda and Darth Vader, wielding lightsabers and Force powers during eligible matches. Space combat is introduced as a new battlefield type, letting players dogfight in starfighters or land aboard enemy capital ships to continue the fight on foot. Six soldier classes are available across all four factions: Infantry, Heavy, Sniper, and Engineer form the standard roster, alongside two faction-specific special classes unlocked through a points system, such as the Wookiee and Bothan Spy for the Rebel Alliance.
Sixteen new locations are included, drawing from Episode III settings like Utapau and Mustafar alongside classic trilogy locations including the Death Star interior and the Tantive IV. Online multiplayer supports up to 64 players across five modes: Conquest, Assault, one and two-flag Capture the Flag, and Hunt.
The game's original GameSpy-based online servers shut down in 2014, but multiplayer was restored on PC in 2017 through a patch enabling Steam and GOG cross-play. Star Wars: Battlefront II holds a Metacritic score of 78 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.

Yes. This is the original 2005 Star Wars: Battlefront II, developed by Pandemic Studios and published by LucasArts, not the 2017 reboot developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The two games share a title but are entirely separate releases from different eras of the franchise, with different developers, gameplay systems, and storylines.
Yes. The original GameSpy-based servers shut down in 2014, but online multiplayer for the PC version was restored in 2017 through a patch that enabled cross-play between Steam and GOG. Matches support up to 64 players across five different game modes.
Yes. Star Wars: Battlefront II was the first game in the original series to let players directly control hero and villain characters such as Yoda, Mace Windu, and Darth Vader, wielding lightsabers and Force powers during Hero Assault mode and other eligible matches. In the previous game, these characters only appeared as AI-controlled units.
The original Battlefront used a more open conquest-style structure without a defined storyline. Battlefront II introduces a narrative-driven campaign called Rise of the Empire, following a veteran clone trooper of the 501st Legion across mission-based objectives spanning the prequel and original trilogy eras, with a clear story and defined goals for each mission.
