Developed and self-published by Eric Barone under the name ConcernedApe, Stardew Valley is a farming simulation RPG released on February 26, 2016, for PC, with versions following for macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch 2. Players inherit a rundown farm from their grandfather and leave behind a corporate office job to rebuild it from scratch in the rural town of Pelican Town.

The core loop covers crop farming across multiple seasons, livestock care, fishing, foraging, and mining in a procedurally generated cave system that goes 120 floors deep. Each activity feeds into the others, with mines providing ore for crafting tools and equipment, and profits from the farm funding upgrades to buildings, livestock capacity, and the farmhouse. Six distinct farm layouts offer different starting advantages and challenges, letting players tailor the experience toward combat, foraging, fishing, or pure crop production from the start.

Beyond the farm, players build relationships with 30 Pelican Town residents through daily conversations and gift-giving, unlocking unique story events for each character and eventually the option to marry one of 12 marriage candidates. A Community Center questline offers an alternative to selling out to the Joja Corporation, rewarding players with town-wide improvements tied to donations of crops, fish, minerals, and artisan goods. The game supports multiplayer for up to four players in a shared farm, with cross-play between Steam and PC Game Pass versions.
