About Starfield

Starfield is a single-player science fiction action RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released on September 6, 2023, for PC via Steam and Xbox Series X/S, with a PlayStation 5 version following on April 7, 2026. Directed by Todd Howard, it is the studio's first entirely new universe in over 25 years, since the original Elder Scrolls.

Set in the year 2330, humanity has left Earth behind and colonized a region of the galaxy known as the Settled Systems. Players join Constellation, the last group of space explorers dedicated to uncovering the mysteries of the universe, after coming into contact with a strange artifact that sets off the game's central story. As with previous Bethesda RPGs, the most defining story is the one shaped by the player's own choices and actions across the galaxy.

Character creation and customization are among the most detailed Bethesda has built to date, feeding into a flexible skill system that lets players specialize across combat, science, social, and physical skill trees as they progress. Exploration spans over 1,000 planets, with Bethesda blending handcrafted content in major settlements and points of interest alongside procedurally generated systems for the wider galaxy. New Atlantis, the largest human settlement in the game, anchors one of several major cities available to explore alongside numerous smaller towns and outposts.

Ship customization is a core system, letting players build and modify their own vessels piece by piece for combat, cargo capacity, or exploration. Outpost building lets players establish their own bases across different planets, extracting resources and constructing facilities. Persuasion during dialogue is handled through a dedicated minigame rather than simple dialogue checks, adding a skill-based layer to social encounters.

Starfield: Shattered Space, the game's first major story expansion, released September 30, 2024, introducing a new culture, planet, and a central cosmic threat for players to investigate, alongside additions like a new mech vehicle system designed to integrate with the base game's combat. Starfield holds a Metacritic score of 85 and a Mixed rating on Steam based on recent reviews.
