About Steep
Steep is an open-world extreme sports game developed by Ubisoft Annecy, a French studio based near the Alps, and published by Ubisoft. It was released on December 2, 2016, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It's the first original game developed by Ubisoft Annecy, previously known for contributing multiplayer modes to the Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell franchises, with development inspired both by the studio's proximity to the Alps and by the traversal systems built for Ghost Recon Wildlands.
The game drops players into a massive open-world rendition of the Alps with no set narrative, instead structuring progression around free exploration, discovering mountain regions, and completing challenges across four core disciplines: skiing, snowboarding, wingsuit flying, and paragliding. A free update shortly after launch added Alaska as a new region, and subsequent DLC expanded the world further with Japan and Korea, alongside additional activities including sledding, BASE jumping, speed riding, and rocket-powered wingsuits.
Players can carve their own custom lines down any mountain, sharing routes and replays with friends through the game's trail feature, or compete directly against others who drop into the same session in real time. The always-online, shared-world structure means other players can appear in a session at any point, even when approaching the game solo, a design choice that drew some criticism from reviewers who felt it worked against a more focused single-player experience.
Steep received mixed reviews at launch, with critics praising the scale and visual beauty of its open world and range of activities while criticizing its lack of direction and the constraints of its always-online design. By February 2019, Ubisoft reported the game had been played by over 10 million individual players. A Winter Olympics-themed expansion, Steep: Road to the Olympics, released December 5, 2017. Steep holds a Metacritic score of 72.
