About Still Wakes the Deep
Still Wakes the Deep is a psychological horror game developed by The Chinese Room, a British studio previously known for Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, and published by Secret Mode. Announced in June 2023 and released on June 18, 2024, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, the game was originally pitched by studio co-founder Dan Pinchbeck as "The Thing set on an oil rig," and marks the studio's return to narrative-driven horror after a decade away from the genre.
Set aboard the Beira D, an oil drilling platform in the North Sea, the story follows Cameron "Caz" McLeary, an electrician stranded after the rig drills into something that shouldn't have been disturbed. With all communication severed and every exit gone, Caz must navigate the collapsing platform, searching for surviving crew members while avoiding industrial hazards, treacherous weather, and monstrous beings that have come aboard. Played entirely from a first-person perspective, the game features no combat system, relying instead on stealth, environmental navigation, and simple puzzle-solving to carry players through its largely linear structure. Areas revisited later in the story are shown transformed by flooding and destruction, reflecting the rig's ongoing collapse.
Two difficulty modes are available at the start of a new game: Standard, which balances challenge with narrative pacing, and Story, a lower-risk option letting players focus on the game's atmosphere and dialogue without worrying as much about failure. A free update in December 2024 added Silver Screen, a black-and-white visual mode that strips out color-coded guidance cues for a more immersive, unassisted playthrough, alongside a Chapter Select option. An expansion, Siren's Rest, released on the game's one-year anniversary in June 2025, set in 1986 and following a new cast exploring the sunken ruins of the Beira D.
Still Wakes the Deep won three BAFTA Games Awards, including Best New IP, and holds a Metacritic score of 77, with critics broadly praising its story, atmosphere, and voice performances while noting criticism toward its linear structure and relatively short length.
