About Subnautica

Developed and published by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, Subnautica is an open-world underwater survival game that was fully released on January 23, 2018, for PC, following four years in Steam Early Access. Players take on the role of a survivor who crash-lands on an ocean-covered alien planet and must gather resources, craft equipment, and build underwater bases to stay alive while uncovering the planet's secrets.

The game is built around vertical exploration. The ocean begins as a shallow, brightly lit reef teeming with wildlife and resources, and gradually gives way to deeper, darker, and more dangerous biomes the further down players descend. Each zone has its own ecosystem of creatures, materials, and environmental hazards, with the abyssal depths presenting a fundamentally different experience from the shallow zones near the surface. Navigation is handled through a range of craftable vehicles, from the basic Seamoth personal submarine to the large Cyclops, a fully crewed submarine capable of housing a base module inside it.

Subnautica has no traditional combat system. Survival depends on oxygen management, hunger and thirst, depth pressure, and avoiding or outwitting the planet's more aggressive fauna rather than fighting it. Resources are gathered by scanning, collecting, and fabricating using an in-game blueprint system that unlocks progressively as players explore. The story is told entirely through environmental discovery, radio signals, and data logs found throughout the ocean.

Subnautica holds a Metacritic score of 87 and an Overwhelmingly Positive overall Steam rating across over 330,000 reviews, making it one of the highest-rated survival games ever released on PC.
