The story is set in Avalon, a dark reimagining of the Arthurian mythological isle. Six hundred years after Arthur led survivors from the plague-ravaged Homelands to conquer Avalon and suppress the Wyrdness using Merlin's Menhir totems, the totems are fading, the primordial force of chaos is spreading again, and the Red Death is returning. Players arrive as a stranger in the south of Avalon and are drawn into navigating a fractured land torn between the kingdom of Kamelot, the Dál Riata tribes, and a garrison of soldiers, while uncovering the darker truths behind Arthur's reign.
The open world spans three distinct zones: the misty Horns of the South, the sun-bathed Cuanacht, and the snowy Forlorn Swords. The full game contains over 250 unique, fully voiced NPCs, more than 200 side quests, 70 dungeons, and over 60 enemy types. Player decisions shape faction relationships and story outcomes, with a branching main questline offering dozens of possible endings depending on the choices made throughout the campaign.
Combat supports a wide range of playstyles across melee, ranged, magic, stealth, and hybrid builds. Players can equip two-handed weapons, dual-wield one-handed weapons, use shields, bows, magic spells, throwables, and alchemical mixtures. A depth of interconnected stats, perks, gear, and crafting lets players shape a specific build rather than following a fixed class structure. Supporting systems include fishing, farming, blacksmithing, alchemy, cooking, mining, and home management, all integrated into the open world rather than separated as optional minigames.
