About Tempest Rising
Tempest Rising is a real-time strategy game developed by Slipgate Ironworks and 2B Games, published by 3D Realms and Knights Peak, built on Unreal Engine 5. The game was first announced by THQ Nordic in August 2022, following years of earlier development under the working title Tempest Dawn. It was released on Steam on April 17, 2025, after a publishing mix-up gave everyone early access originally intended only for Deluxe Edition pre-order buyers, a decision the developers ultimately embraced rather than correcting. The soundtrack was composed by Frank Klepacki, known for his work on the original Command & Conquer and Red Alert games.
Set in an alternate history where the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 escalated into a devastating Third World War, the story takes place in a fictional 1997, decades after the war left the planet scarred. In the aftermath, a mysterious and potent organism called Tempest began emerging from cracks in the Earth's crust, becoming a valuable resource that two rival factions now fight to control. The Global Defense Force operates as a NATO-style peacekeeping coalition built around conventional firepower and solid defensive capabilities, while the Tempest Dynasty is a post-war eastern power favoring speed, aggression, and mobile base mechanics. A third faction, the Veti, wielding advanced alien technology, is confirmed for a future update and is currently accessible only in limited beta testing.
Base construction follows the classic Command & Conquer formula: players deploy a Mobile Construction Vehicle to establish a base, then build production, tech, defense, and utility structures on a grid layout, all requiring power to function efficiently. Harvesters gather Tempest from resource fields to fund the economy, while a secondary resource, Intel, is earned through combat and specialized structures, spent on high-tier support powers like orbital strikes. Customizable "Doctrines" let players tailor unit stats and support powers before a mission or match, adding a layer of loadout-based strategy on top of the classic RTS foundation.
Two 11-mission single-player campaigns, one for each of the two currently playable factions, feature voiced mission briefings and let players customize their army before each mission. Multiplayer supports Custom Game lobbies against AI, ranked 1v1 and 2v2 matchmaking using the Glicko-2 rating system, and skirmish battles supporting up to 500 units per team, with two unique superweapons. Post-launch support has continued steadily, with new maps, a Superior Firepower update adding global production queues and a lore codex, and ongoing beta testing for the Veti faction throughout 2025 and 2026.
