About The Last Remnant
Developed and published by Square Enix and released on PC on April 9, 2009, The Last Remnant is set in a world shared by four races — the human-like Mitra, the hulking Yama, the small reptilian Qsiti, and the four-armed feline Sovani — bound together by the existence of Remnants, mysterious ancient artefacts of enormous power whose origins remain unknown. As the power of Remnants gradually disrupts the world's balance and conflict breaks out between those who rule and those who follow, young Rush Sykes finds himself caught in the middle of an escalating war while searching for his kidnapped sister.
What distinguishes The Last Remnant from conventional JRPGs is its union-based battle system. Rather than controlling individual characters in turn-based combat, players command groups of fighters called unions, directing them to engage, outflank, and support each other across dynamic battlefield conditions. Morale plays a central role — high morale increases attack power and reduces incoming damage, while low morale weakens your forces and emboldens the enemy. The PC version introduced several improvements over the original Xbox 360 release, including a Turbo Mode that allows battles to be played at twice the normal speed, greater freedom in creating unions without mandatory leader units, and a new equipment preview feature for smarter purchasing decisions. Players can also choose between English and Japanese voice acting throughout the entire game.
The Last Remnant holds a Very Positive rating on Steam with 81% positive reviews across more than 4,100 players, with devoted fans consistently citing its unique combat system and memorable cast as standout qualities.

The Last Remnant is the original 2009 PC version developed by Square Enix, featuring all the PC-specific improvements including Turbo Mode, updated union creation, and the equipment preview feature. The Last Remnant Remastered is a later version released on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms with updated visuals built on Unreal Engine 4. The Remastered version is not currently available on PC via Steam — the original PC version available on GameBoost is the definitive PC experience and includes improvements that were never available on the original console release.
Yes. The Last Remnant has a significant learning curve, particularly around its union-based battle system and progression mechanics. Players who rush into battles or level up improperly can find themselves facing enemies they cannot beat without extensive grinding. The game rewards patience, careful unit management, and willingness to experiment with different formations and arts. The PC version is generally considered more manageable than the original Xbox 360 release due to balance adjustments made for the port.
The main story takes approximately 40 to 50 hours to complete. A full playthrough including side quests, optional bosses, and all available content can extend to 80 to 100 hours. The game has substantial optional content for players who want to explore every corner of its world.
No. The Last Remnant is a single-player game only. There is no multiplayer or co-op mode.
As a 2009 title The Last Remnant runs on virtually any modern PC without issues. Minimum specs require a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent, 1 GB RAM on Windows XP or 2 GB RAM on Vista, an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 or ATI Radeon HD 2900, and 8 GB of storage. The game will run comfortably on any hardware made in the last fifteen years.
