About The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is an action RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Private Division, directed by Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain. It was announced in December 2018 and released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on October 25, 2019, initially as an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC, with the Steam version following on October 23, 2020, and a Nintendo Switch port arriving in June 2020.

Players wake up on a colony ship called the Hope, which missed its designated destination and has drifted off course for 70 years, arriving at the Halcyon system decades late. Roused by an eccentric scientist and tasked with finding the resources needed to revive the rest of the hibernating crew, the player travels to the nearby colony of Halcyon, controlled by rival megacorporations locked in a struggle for power. Terraforming efforts on the colony have gone badly wrong, leaving behind mutated wildlife and hostile threats scattered across its planets, alongside a story built entirely around player choice and the consequences that follow.

Character creation lets players build a fully custom human protagonist, choosing skills and attributes that shape combat options, dialogue outcomes, and how NPCs across the colony react to them. Combat blends firearms and melee weapons with Tactical Time Dilation, a slow-motion mechanic letting players target specific body parts for tactical advantage in a fight. The game's writing, characters, and freedom of choice drew widespread praise at launch, though critics noted its combat as comparatively bland and drew frequent comparisons to the Fallout series, unsurprising given Obsidian's history developing Fallout: New Vegas.

Two DLC expansions were released after launch. Peril on Gorgon, released September 2020, raises the level cap and sends players to the research asteroid of Gorgon to investigate a cancelled, disastrous scientific project, in a noir-styled mystery involving a severed arm and wealthy recluse Minnie Ambrose. Murder on Eridanos, released March 2021, raises the level cap again and casts players as a detective investigating the murder of Halcyon Helen, a beloved celebrity spokesperson, at the Grand Colonial Hotel on the gas giant Eridanos.

The Outer Worlds holds a Metacritic score of 82. The Outer Worlds is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Game Pass Premium. If you are already a subscriber, you can access it directly through your membership. If you do not have Game Pass, GameBoost offers Xbox Game Pass gift cards as an alternative way to get started.
