About The Outlast Trials
Developed and published by Red Barrels and fully released on March 5, 2024 following an Early Access period beginning in May 2023, The Outlast Trials is a prequel to both Outlast and Outlast 2, set in the Cold War era before the events of either game. Players take the role of Reagents, civilians coerced into Murkoff Corporation's program of experimental brainwashing and mind control. The goal is simple on paper: complete the therapy and earn your freedom. The reality is a series of increasingly brutal trials set across oppressive facilities patrolled by grotesque enemies, requiring stealth, resource management, and cooperation to survive.
The game introduces several systems new to the Outlast series. Up to four players can tackle trials together, each choosing from four distinct classes with upgradeable abilities that complement different playstyles. Night vision goggles return as a core mechanic, with battery management remaining a source of constant tension. A deep customisation system lets players upgrade their character, unlock skills, and personalise their cell between trials. The Outlast Trials is a live service game with regular content updates adding new trials, seasons, and events. It received generally positive reviews from critics upon full launch, with praise for its oppressive atmosphere, creative trial design, and the way it translates the Outlast series' signature dread into a co-operative format. The game holds a Very Positive rating on Steam with over 80% positive reviews across more than 50,000 players.
