The original Rome: Total War is one of the most acclaimed entries in the Total War series, combining turn-based empire management on a campaign map with real-time tactical battles. Players choose a faction from the ancient world and build an empire through conquest, diplomacy, trade, and strategic warfare, managing armies, developing settlements, and navigating the political landscape of the Roman era. The campaign spans Europe, North Africa, and the Near East.

The remaster rebuilds the game's visual presentation from the ground up, with fully overhauled character models, battlefield terrain, environments, and animations for 4K and ultra-high-definition resolution. The original visual presentation can still be switched on at any time. Sixteen factions that were previously unplayable in the original are now fully available, expanding the total roster from 22 to 38.

Gameplay refinements include a redesigned diplomacy system, new Merchant agents capable of establishing trade networks and buying out rivals, a redesigned tutorial, an in-game wiki, improved tooltips, and better accessibility options including colorblind support. Steam Workshop mod support is included at launch. Cross-platform multiplayer across Windows, macOS, and Linux was added, a first for the franchise.

Both original expansions are included: Barbarian Invasion, which adds a campaign set during the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and Alexander, which recreates Alexander the Great's campaigns across Persia. The original Rome: Total War Collection is also bundled in for players who do not already own it.
