About Universe Sandbox
Universe Sandbox is a physics-based space simulation game developed and published by Giant Army, a Seattle-based studio founded by designer Dan Dixon, who released the original Universe Sandbox back in May 2008. Work on a successor began in 2011, entering Steam Early Access on August 24, 2015, initially under the working title Universe Sandbox². In December 2018, this newer version was officially renamed to simply Universe Sandbox, with the original 2011 release renamed Universe Sandbox Legacy to distinguish between the two.
The game merges real-time gravity simulation, climate modeling, collision physics, and material interactions into a single sandbox, letting players explore the scale and fragility of the universe using genuine scientific data and Newtonian mechanics rather than simplified approximations. Players can place and manipulate objects drawn from an extensive library covering every major celestial body in the Solar System, along with tens of real stars, including Proxima Centauri, Betelgeuse, and Arcturus.
N-body gravity simulation runs at nearly any speed, letting players observe orbital mechanics unfold over seconds or millennia. Massive planetary and stellar collisions can be triggered and watched in real time, with the game modeling the resulting physical and material consequences. Climate simulation lets players adjust variables like solar output or atmospheric composition and watch how a planet's environment responds over time, offering both an educational tool and a demonstrative showcase for exploring theoretical scenarios that would otherwise require a supercomputer to model accurately.
