Developed by Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Publishing, Valheim is a Norse mythology survival sandbox that entered Steam Early Access on February 2, 2021, for PC, with Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions following on March 14, 2023. Players are sent to Valheim, the tenth Norse world, a vast purgatorial realm where the disgraced dead must prove themselves by hunting down the forsaken creatures that Odin has imprisoned there.

Each biome in the procedurally generated world is governed by a boss that drops the materials needed to progress to the next tier of equipment. The Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain, Plains, Mistlands, and Ashlands each present a distinct visual style, enemy roster, and set of resources, with difficulty scaling naturally as players venture further from their starting point. Reaching and defeating each biome's boss is the primary progression driver, with the materials dropped enabling new weapons, armor sets, and crafting stations.

Outside of combat, the game features a comprehensive building system that supports everything from basic shelters to elaborate longhouses, fortresses, and harbors. Sailing is a core mechanic, with players constructing rafts, karves, and longships to explore the world's coastlines and islands. Crafting covers food preparation, mead brewing, weapon forging, and equipment upgrading, with each system feeding into the next.

The game supports up to ten players in online co-op, with crossplay between PC and Xbox. A dedicated server option is available for persistent world hosting. Valheim was developed by a team of five people and has sold over 12 million copies. It holds a Very Positive overall Steam rating across over 450,000 reviews. Valheim is not currently available on Xbox Game Pass. The game left the service in late September 2024.
