Description
IMPORTANT NOTE: The game focuses on exploration and builds tension slowly to create a deeper and more meaningful experience. Its story is unveiled through surreal imaging and subtle environment details. Be mindful that it is a difficult game in unconventional ways.
Visage is a first-person psychological horror game.
Explore a mysterious ever-changing house in a slow-paced, atmospheric world that combines both uncannily comforting and horrifyingly realistic environments, and enjoy a genuinely terrifying experience.
EnvironmentThe game is set inside a huge house in which terrible things have happened. You’ll wander through the gloomy corridors, explore every dead room, and get lost in endless mazes, your head filling with memories of the dead families that once lived in this very home. This twisted environment, void of any life other than yours, takes you to places you couldn't even bear imagining.

StorylineThis house is stained with a terrible past. Families were brutally murdered by their own family members, people went insane, many committed suicide, and other grisly events occurred. Each and every room has its story painted on an invisible canvas. As a player, you will relive parts of this dark past, and each of its fragments will leave you restless and terrified. You’ll soon wish you could join the dead's ranks in their abyss, but death won't help you leave this place. Will you run from it, or will you try to uncover the truth behind the shadows?

Dark entitiesThe families that died in the house will haunt you and leave you restless. They’ll follow your every move, watch you from every corner, play tricks with your mind, and try to attack you. Why do they haunt you? What have you done? This you have to find out on your own.

GameplayIn Visage, you are defenseless; no weapons could save you from the dreadful entities stalking you from the next corner, the next door, or underneath your feet. You’ll be able to pick up key elements, interact with the environment, and search for things that may help you escape this nightmare or pull you deeper into it.

Dying is part of the game. You need to avoid terror at all costs, as dark entities are attracted to it. Maintaining your mind as sane as possible will keep you from joining the ranks of the dead. Doing so will not be easy, and you'll have to figure out ways, like staying in the light, to avoid going insane.

About Visage
Visage is a first-person psychological horror game developed and published by SadSquare Studio, an independent Canadian studio. It entered Steam Early Access on October 2, 2018, and was released fully on October 30, 2020, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Enhanced versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S followed in 2021.
The game is set inside a sprawling house with a long and violent history. Players control Dwayne Anderson, a man who finds himself trapped within it and forced to piece together what happened to the families who lived and died there. The story is structured around four chapters, each focused on a different former resident: their backstory, the events that led to their deaths, and the supernatural remnants they left behind. The house serves as a single continuous space explored throughout all four chapters, with different areas unlocking as each tale progresses.
Visage offers no combat and no weapons. Players are entirely defenseless against the entities that inhabit the house. The only tools available are environmental: candles, lighters, and pills that slow the loss of sanity. Sanity is the central resource. Spending too long in the dark, witnessing disturbing events, or being stalked by entities drains it over time. As it falls, the game's world becomes increasingly unstable, visions intensify, and hostile presences grow more persistent. Staying in lit areas and maintaining composure is the only form of protection the game offers.
Inspired by P.T., the playable teaser created for the cancelled Silent Hills project, Visage was built on Unreal Engine 4 and prioritizes slow-building dread and atmosphere over sudden shocks. The full game runs approximately fifteen hours across all four chapters. Visage holds a Metacritic score of 81 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.

Yes, deliberately so. Visage was directly inspired by P.T., the cancelled Silent Hills playable teaser developed by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro. It shares the same first-person perspective, single haunted location, slow atmospheric pacing, and focus on psychological dread. Visage expands on that foundation significantly in terms of scope, running around fifteen hours across four chapters compared to P.T.'s shorter runtime.
Sanity drains when the player spends time in the dark, witnesses disturbing events, or is stalked by entities. As sanity drops, the environment becomes more unstable, hallucinations grow more intense, and hostile presences become harder to avoid. Players can restore sanity by staying in lit areas, using candles or lighters, or taking pills found throughout the house. Losing all sanity results in death.
Visage is primarily built around slow-burning atmospheric horror and psychological dread rather than sudden jumpscares. The game creates fear through sound design, environmental detail, and the unpredictable behavior of its entities. Some sudden moments do occur, but they arise from the tension built over time rather than scripted shock events.
A full playthrough covering all four chapters takes approximately fifteen hours. Exploration pace and how much time is spent on puzzles can extend or shorten this somewhat, but the game is more substantial than most walking simulators or short-form horror experiences.
