About Viscera Cleanup Detail
Viscera Cleanup Detail is a first-person simulation game developed and published by RuneStorm. It entered Steam Early Access on April 4, 2014, and was released fully on October 23, 2015, for PC. The premise flips the typical sci-fi action game on its head.
A catastrophic event has taken place on a space station. An alien invasion, a zombie outbreak, or some other disaster has run its course, and the nameless hero has done their job. The threat is gone. Now it is the player's turn. As a space station sanitation worker, the task is to clean up what was left behind: mopping up blood, collecting scattered body parts, picking up spent cartridge casings, and disposing of everything in the correct bins before clocking out.
Cleaning is fully physics-based. The mop picks up blood but can also spread it if dragged carelessly across dry surfaces. Buckets fill up and need to be emptied regularly. Items can be knocked over, creating fresh messes. Footsteps track blood across clean floors if players are not paying attention to where they walk. The game rewards patience and careful movement, and punishes carelessness with more work.
Multiple levels cover different disaster scenarios, each with its own layout, hazards, and set of messes to deal with. A note-signing system at the end of each level evaluates the quality of the cleanup before the player clocks out. The game includes a level editor and full Steam Workshop support for community-made maps and custom scenarios.
Online co-op and local split-screen allow multiple players to tackle jobs together, which can either speed things up considerably or introduce entirely new chaos depending on the group. Viscera Cleanup Detail holds a Very Positive rating on Steam.
