Worms W.M.D is a 2D turn-based artillery strategy game developed and published by Team17. It was released on August 23, 2016, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch version following on November 23, 2017. The game was built as a deliberate return to the series' Worms Armageddon roots, aiming to channel the spirit of that beloved entry with a fresh hand-drawn 2D art style, following a period where the series had experimented with a 2.5D presentation.
Players work through 30 campaign levels of increasing difficulty, controlling a team of worms armed with an arsenal spanning classic weapons like the Holy Hand Grenade and Concrete Donkey alongside brand new additions, including a bazooka that creates fiery explosions and a novelty weapon involving a dodgy phone battery. A new crafting system lets players gather parts from special crates or by dismantling existing weapons, letting them build new tools even outside their own turn. Vehicles, including helicopters and tanks, and the ability to hide inside destructible buildings add fresh tactical layers to the classic turn-based formula, while previous mechanics like character classes, water physics, and dynamic objects seen in earlier games were removed to keep the focus closer to the series' original design.
Combat supports up to five opponents facing off with up to eight worms each, playable in local or online multiplayer, including ranked matches. Local split-screen and couch-based multiplayer round out the ways to play with friends in person, alongside full online support for players spread across different locations.
