About Assassin's Creed Shadows

Assassin's Creed Shadows is an open-world action RPG developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft. The story takes place in Japan during the late Sengoku period, a time of prolonged civil war across the country's feudal domains. Players alternate between two protagonists whose paths are intertwined throughout the campaign. Fujibayashi Naoe is a kunoichi trained in the shinobi traditions of Iga Province who sets out on a personal quest for revenge following a traumatic event that upends her world. Yasuke is a powerful African samurai, inspired by the historical figure who served under Oda Nobunaga in the 1580s, seeking to confront the demons of his past and find new purpose in an unfamiliar land. Their contrasting backgrounds gradually converge as both are drawn into the Assassin Brotherhood's broader struggle against the Templar Order.

The dual protagonist system shapes how the open world is approached. Naoe is built around stealth, parkour, and precision assassination using kunai, shuriken, smoke bombs, a grappling hook, and the hidden blade. Light, shadow, and noise all affect detection, with enemies actively responding to changes in their environment. Yasuke is a direct contrast, a heavily built warrior focused on head-on combat through powerful strikes, defensive counters, and the ability to absorb and deal significant damage in prolonged fights. Switching between them is built into how the game approaches missions and side content, with each character offering a genuinely different way to engage every situation.

The open world spans historical Japanese environments, including castle towns, temples, mountain passes, bamboo forests, and coastal ports, with dynamic weather and seasonal systems affecting visibility, enemy behavior, and traversal. A hideout system lets players develop a base of operations, recruit allies, and unlock new support options throughout the campaign.

Post-launch content included several Story Drops, adding new quests, alongside the Claws of Awaji paid expansion. A final major update was released on June 16, 2026, bringing the game's active development to a close. Assassin's Creed Shadows holds a Metacritic score of 85 on Xbox Series X/S.
