About Back 4 Blood
Back 4 Blood is a first-person cooperative shooter developed by Turtle Rock Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. It was released on October 12, 2021, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Seven of the developers on the team previously worked on the original Left 4 Dead demo, and the game is broadly regarded as a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel.
The story follows a catastrophic outbreak caused by a parasite known as the Devil Worm, which has killed or infected most of humanity. Survivors known as Cleaners, hardened apocalypse veterans, band together to fight back against the infected creatures called the Ridden and reclaim what remains of the world. Twelve playable Cleaners are available, each with their own backstory and a unique passive perk that shapes how they contribute to a run.
The story campaign supports up to four players, either online or with AI-controlled teammates filling empty slots, and can also be played entirely solo. A card system sits at the center of the game's replayability: before each level, players build a deck of cards that adjust stats like health, damage, and stamina, while the Game Director can deploy Corruption cards against the team to increase enemy spawns, trigger fog effects, or scale up the size of the horde. A simpler Classic mode strips out the card system for a more straightforward experience aimed at newer players.
Swarm is the game's competitive PvP mode, pitting a team of four Cleaners against a team of four players controlling mutated Ridden in enclosed arenas, with both sides eliminated within a set area. Copper, the in-game currency, is used to purchase upgrades and items for both Cleaners and their gear.
Three expansions were released after launch. Tunnels of Terror, released April 12, 2022, added two playable characters and a new PvE activity called Ridden Hives. Children of the Worm, released August 30, 2022, introduced the playable Cleaner Prophet Dan, a new campaign act, and four new enemy types. River of Blood, released December 6, 2022, was the third and final expansion. Turtle Rock announced in January 2023 that active development had ended and no further content updates would follow. The game holds a Metacritic score of 77 and Mostly Positive rating on Steam.
