About Blasphemous

Blasphemous is a 2D Metroidvania action-adventure game developed by The Game Kitchen, a Spanish studio, and published by Team17. It began as a Kickstarter campaign in 2017 and was released on September 10, 2019, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with macOS and Linux versions following in September 2020. It's the first entry in what has since grown into an ongoing series, followed by Blasphemous 2 in 2023.

Cvstodia is a savage, deeply religious land where churches outnumber people two to one and superstition governs daily life. The story begins in the aftermath of a nightmarish massacre that wiped out the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, a group opposed to Escribar, the Last Son of The Miracle. The Penitent One, the sole survivor, awakens among the corpses of his brothers, recovers his sword, and sets out on a journey to seek salvation, or possibly confirm he no longer deserves it, across the corrupted, nightmarish landscape of Cvstodia.

Combat centers on the Penitent One's single weapon, Mea Culpa, a rose-thorned sword capable of feeding on the wielder's own sins as an ongoing gameplay mechanic. Exploration spans a non-linear, interconnected world in the classic Metroidvania tradition, with players finding gear, relics, and rosary beads to survive increasingly difficult encounters and hunt down the game's many secrets. The game's hand-drawn pixel art was created frame by frame, drawing heavily on Spanish Catholic imagery, Gothic architecture, and dark fantasy visual influences.

Three free content updates were released after launch. The Stir of Dawn, released in August 2020, added a New Game+ mode and a full Spanish dub. Strife and Ruin, released in February 2021, added a new questline for guest character Miriam from Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a Boss Rush mode, and challenge rooms. Wounds of Eventide, released in December 2021, was the largest of the three, adding new bosses, NPCs, quests, and an entirely new ending directly leading into Blasphemous 2. A physical Deluxe Edition was released for consoles in June 2021, including a comic, artbook, and bonus skins. The game holds a Metacritic score of 77 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
