About Blasphemous 2
Blasphemous 2 is a 2D Metroidvania action-adventure game developed by The Game Kitchen and published by Team17. It was officially announced in April 2023 and released on August 24, 2023, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions following on November 2, 2023. Rather than reuse the original game's codebase, the team spent 18 months rebuilding the game from the ground up, with producer David Erosa citing a goal of pushing the series closer to the classic Metroidvania genre.
The story picks up where Wounds of Eventide, the final free DLC for the original Blasphemous, left off. Having awoken in a strange new land after that ending, the Penitent One's journey begins again, entangled in a fresh struggle against The Miracle following an omen foretelling the birth of a new miracle child. The world of Cvstodia expands once more into a series of enchantingly grotesque landscapes, oozing gothic charm and littered with punishing traps, with no single correct path forward and only the Penitent One's own scores left to settle.
Combat receives a significant expansion over the original, with the Penitent One now able to wield three distinct weapons rather than a single fixed sword, each carrying its own new moves, brutal executions, and combo options. A more flexible skill system lets players customize and improve their base kit alongside these weapons, giving considerably more room for build variety than the first game allowed. The team also took time to refine core controls based directly on community feedback from the original release. Full voice acting is included in both English and Castilian Spanish.
Post-launch support has continued well beyond release. Mea Culpa, a paid DLC, arrived in late October 2024. The Third Sin, a significant free expansion, dropped in June 2026, continuing the game's ongoing development years after its original launch. Blasphemous 2 holds a Metacritic score of 83 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
