The campaign takes place in 1981 at the height of Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. Players control a custom operative known as Bell, recruited by CIA officer Russell Adler into a multinational task force hunting down Perseus, a Soviet agent whose stated goal is to subvert American influence and tilt the global balance of power. The campaign features player-driven choices that affect how certain missions play out and shape the game's ending, with multiple possible conclusions depending on the decisions made throughout. Historical figures, including Ronald Reagan, appear in the story alongside fictional agents and operatives, with missions spanning locations like East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, and the Soviet KGB headquarters.
Multiplayer supports cross-platform play and introduces a mix of classic and new game modes across maps, drawing inspiration from 1980s-era settings. The Scorestreak system returns, rewarding players for sustained performance rather than consecutive kills.
