The game is set entirely underground. Players find themselves drawn to a vast cavern by the light of an ancient artifact called the Core, which they inadvertently awaken upon arrival. From there, the goal is to explore the procedurally generated network of tunnels and biomes surrounding it, gather resources, build a base, and uncover what the Core actually is.

Mining is the backbone of progression. Players break through different terrain types to collect materials used for crafting tools, weapons, armor, and base components. Each biome introduces new enemy types, unique resources, and a boss that must be defeated to push further into deeper and more demanding areas. Farming and automation systems allow players to build more self-sustaining operations as their base grows over time.

The game supports solo play and online co-op for up to eight players, with the world shared across all participants in a session. Playing with others scales the challenge and opens up more complex building and farming setups.

Post-launch updates have expanded the game significantly, adding new biomes, bosses, crafting systems, and mechanics since the 1.0 launch. Steam Workshop mod support was added in early 2026. Critics have frequently compared Core Keeper to Minecraft, Terraria, and Stardew Valley for its blend of exploration, building, and survival systems in a distinct underground setting.
