About Dead Island: Definitive Edition
Dead Island: Definitive Edition is a first-person action role-playing game developed by Techland, the Polish studio behind Dying Light, and published by Deep Silver. It was released on May 31, 2016, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Linux version following on June 3, 2016. It's a remaster of the original 2011 Dead Island, rebuilt on the Chrome Engine 6 with updated visuals and an inventory and combat system carried over from Dead Island: Riptide.
Players find themselves stranded on Banoi, a tropical island near Papua New Guinea, in the middle of a sudden zombie outbreak. Taking control of one of four survivors, each immune to the infection for their own reasons, players fight to stay alive across a sprawling open world overrun by the undead, uncovering the cause of the outbreak while scavenging for supplies and building increasingly effective weapons along the way.
Melee combat forms the core of the gameplay, letting players craft and modify a wide range of weapons, from simple blunt objects to elaborate electrified or explosive creations, with combat built around visceral, physical impact rather than typical shooter mechanics. Character progression covers skills across combat, survival, and fury trees, letting players specialize their chosen character's playstyle over the course of the story. The full campaign supports story-based four-player co-op, letting players team up throughout the entire game, though it's also fully playable solo.
All DLC released for the original 2011 game is included with the Definitive Edition at no additional cost. The game is also available bundled together with Dead Island: Riptide - Definitive Edition and the side-scrolling beat 'em up Dead Island: Retro Revenge as part of the Dead Island: Definitive Collection, though Dead Island: Definitive Edition can also be purchased on its own.
