It is the eighth main entry in the Doom franchise, following Doom Eternal (2020), and serves as a prequel set well before the events of Doom (2016).

The story takes place in the kingdom of Argent D'Nur, where the Night Sentinels and their allies, the Maykrs, wage a relentless war against the forces of Hell over the Heart of Argent. The DOOM Slayer is bound to serve as a weapon of gods and kings, fending off demon hordes while their leader seeks to destroy him and claim sole dominance. The narrative leans more heavily on storytelling than previous entries, with expanded cutscenes and character development offering deeper insight into the Slayer's origins.

Combat moves toward a heavier and more grounded style compared to the acrobatic, fast-paced approach of Doom Eternal. The Shield Saw is the centerpiece of the new arsenal, combining blocking, parrying, and attacking into a single tool, with a meter that drains on use and refills through aggression. The Skull Crusher fires bone fragments at enemies, while melee weapons, including a gauntlet, an iron mace, and a flail, add further options to close-range combat. Twelve ranged weapons and three melee weapons make up the full arsenal alongside the shield.

For the first time in the series, players can pilot vehicles during set encounters, riding a cybernetic dragon for aerial combat or controlling a massive Atlan mech to fight tower-sized demons. Built on the id Tech 8 engine, the game features destructible environments and advanced physics throughout its campaign, which runs roughly 14 to 19 hours for a single playthrough. The game does not include a multiplayer mode, with development focused entirely on the single-player campaign. DOOM: The Dark Ages holds a Metacritic score of 85 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
