About DRAGON BALL FighterZ
DRAGON BALL FighterZ is a 2.5D fighting game developed by Arc System Works and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was released on January 26, 2018, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch version following on September 28, 2018, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions launching in February 2024 alongside an update adding rollback netcode to those platforms and PC. It's Arc System Works' fourth project working with the Dragon Ball license, built on Unreal Engine 4, and won Best Fighting Game at Game Critics Awards' Best of E3 2017 ahead of release.
Gameplay borrows heavily from the Marvel vs. Capcom series' control scheme and team mechanics, with players selecting three fighters to form a team from a roster spanning the Dragon Ball franchise's most iconic characters. The base roster includes 21 playable characters at launch, with three more unlockable through gameplay. Every fighter carries their own move set drawing on famous Dragon Ball techniques, including Goku's Kamehameha and Vegeta's Big Bang Attack, all rendered through 3D character models styled to look like they were pulled directly from the anime.
The story mode, told through animated cutscenes across three arcs, is set sometime between the Universe 6 and Future Trunks sagas of Dragon Ball Super. It centers on Android 21, an original character created for the game whose design was personally supervised by series creator Akira Toriyama. After awakening, Android 21 repairs Android 16, resurrects Frieza, Cell, Nappa, and the Ginyu Force using the Dragon Balls, and seals away the power of Earth's strongest warriors, driving the game's central conflict.
Multiplayer supports ranked matches, an interactive lobby, and a six-player Party Match mode for more casual sessions. A large number of additional characters have released as paid DLC across multiple FighterZ Passes since launch, growing the total roster well beyond the base 24. DRAGON BALL FighterZ holds a Metacritic score of 85 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
