About FINAL FANTASY XVI
FINAL FANTASY XVI is an action RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It was released for PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023, with the PC version launching on Steam on September 17, 2024. The game is set in Valisthea, a dark fantasy world shaped by towering Mothercrystals whose aether sustains the kingdoms built around them. A spreading blight is destroying farmland and threatening those without access to aether, pushing the major powers toward conflict. At the center of this struggle are the Eikons, immensely powerful beings each embodied by a single human host known as a Dominant, who can summon and channel their power in battle.
The story follows Clive Rosfield, eldest son of the Archduke of Rosaria and sworn First Shield to his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix. A catastrophic event during Clive's youth sets him on a path of vengeance and purpose that unfolds across decades, taking him through the courts, battlefields, and hidden underworld of Valisthea.
FINAL FANTASY XVI is the first mainline Final Fantasy title built around real-time action combat from the ground up. The system was directed by Ryota Suzuki, known for his work on Devil May Cry 5, and centers on combining Eikon abilities unlocked throughout the story with standard melee attacks and counters. Boss encounters against full Eikons are among the game's most cinematic set pieces, unfolding as large-scale battles with distinct mechanics across each phase.
Torgal, a wolf companion who travels with Clive, assists in combat and can be commanded to attack, heal, or rescue at any point. The game is single-player only. FINAL FANTASY XVI holds a Metacritic score of 87 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.

No. The Standard Edition includes the base game only. The two DLC chapters, Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide, are sold separately or included in the Complete Edition. They are not part of the standard purchase.
Eikons are supremely powerful beings in the world of Valisthea, each representing a different elemental force or mythological concept. They include Phoenix, Ifrit, Shiva, Titan, Garuda, Ramuh, Bahamut, and Odin, among others. Each Eikon is bound to a single human Dominant who can channel or fully transform into them. Eikons serve as both major boss encounters and as the source of Clive's combat abilities throughout the game.
FINAL FANTASY XVI is a significant departure from earlier entries in the series. The combat is fully real-time action with no party commands or turn-based mechanics. The tone is darker than most mainline entries, closer to mature fantasy than the series' more traditionally bright and adventurous settings. Players familiar with action games like Devil May Cry will find the combat recognizable. Veterans of the series will find the Eikons, world-building, and musical sensibility familiar even as the gameplay differs substantially.
