About Forza Horizon 4
Forza Horizon 4 is an open-world racing game developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was released on October 2, 2018, for Xbox One and Windows 10, with an enhanced Xbox Series X/S version following on November 10, 2020, and a Steam release on March 9, 2021.
The game is set in a fictionalised representation of Great Britain, covering condensed versions of locations including Edinburgh, the Lake District, and the Cotswolds. Its defining feature is a dynamic seasons system: the map rotates weekly between Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring, with each season altering road conditions, available routes, and even which areas are accessible. A frozen lake in Winter, for example, opens up otherwise inaccessible islands.
Player Houses were introduced for the first time in the series, providing properties scattered across the map that unlock fast travel points and additional storage. Horizon Life builds out a broader set of challenges spanning tuning, painting, and racing, tying progression together across different areas of the game beyond races alone. Over 450 licensed cars were available at launch, with more than 100 additional vehicles added through post-launch updates.
Two major expansions were released for the game. Fortune Island, released December 13, 2018, added a new map area, new cars, and a dedicated campaign. Lego Speed Champions, released June 13, 2019, introduced four Lego-themed cars and a separate Lego-styled map section with its own events.
On June 25, 2024, Playground Games and Xbox Game Studios announced that Forza Horizon 4 would be delisted from the Microsoft Store, Steam, and Xbox Game Pass due to expired licensing agreements covering the cars and music featured in the game. The delisting took effect on December 15, 2024. Forza Horizon 4 holds a Metacritic score of 92 and a Very Positive Steam rating.
