Green Hell is an open-world survival simulation game developed and published by Creepy Jar, an independent studio based in Warsaw, Poland, founded in 2016. It entered Steam Early Access on August 29, 2018, and reached its full 1.0 release on September 5, 2019, for PC, with Nintendo Switch following in October 2020, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June 2021. Console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S followed in August 2024, alongside a final development update in September 2024 adding decorative features and closing out the game's active update cycle.
Players wake up alone in the uncharted Amazon rainforest with nothing but a radio to guide them, tasked with staying alive against an environment built around genuine realism, whether that's foraging for food, tending to wounds and infections through a unique inspection mode, managing mental health, or defending against hostile wildlife and tribal threats. Crafting, hunting, building shelters ranging from simple huts to full fortresses, and gathering resources all draw on real-life survival techniques as the foundation for the game's systems.
An optional story mode casts the player as anthropologist Jake Higgins, who wakes up on the edge of the Amazon River searching for his missing wife Mia, a linguist who disappeared while trying to open diplomatic contact with an uncontacted tribe known as the Yabahuaca. Jake's only connection to Mia is through a radio, and as the story unfolds across roughly 25 hours, it gradually reveals darker secrets tied to his own past and the forces at work deep within the jungle. A free prequel campaign, Spirits of Amazonia, was released across two parts in 2021 and later expanded further, adding over 20 hours of additional story content exploring the events leading up to the original campaign.
Endless Mode strips away the narrative entirely, focusing purely on the game's survival systems for players who want the open-ended sandbox experience without a structured story. Online co-op is supported across all modes, letting players team up with friends to face the jungle's dangers together rather than going it alone. Green Hell has received over 20 content updates since its full release, expanding its mechanics and features well beyond what was available at launch.
