The game is the seventh mainline entry in the Guilty Gear series, created by Daisuke Ishiwatari. The story follows the final confrontation with That Man, the figure responsible for the Universal Will project and the widespread destruction it has caused. The narrative is presented in a cinematic format with fully voiced cutscenes and a production quality closer to an animated film than a traditional fighting game story mode.

Combat in GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- was rebuilt with accessibility at the center. The game streamlines some of the more demanding mechanics from earlier entries in the series while preserving the depth that longtime players expect. Wall breaks add a structural dimension to each round, giving players the ability to shatter the arena wall and shift the fight to a new section of the stage.
