About Human: Fall Flat
Human: Fall Flat is a physics-based puzzle platformer developed by Lithuanian studio No Brakes Games and published by Curve Digital. It was released on July 22, 2016, for PC via Steam, following a public prototype uploaded to Itch.io that caught the attention of prominent streamers. Founder Tomas Sakalauskas built the game after abandoning a career in IT and briefly working in mobile game development, describing Human: Fall Flat at the time as his "last shot at gaming." PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions followed in May 2017, with a Nintendo Switch version later that year, and further ports for mobile, Stadia, and current-generation consoles arriving over the following years.
Players control Bob, a wobbly, fully customizable human character, exploring open-ended, dreamlike levels each built around distinct themes and multiple possible solutions to the puzzles inside them. Rather than fixed platforming controls, Bob's movement is governed by physics, requiring players to manually grab objects, climb ledges, and manipulate the environment using his arms and head. Instructional videos hidden as remotes throughout the early levels help introduce mechanics gradually, but beyond that, the game leaves most puzzle-solving entirely up to player experimentation and, frequently, chaotic trial and error.
Human: Fall Flat is fully playable solo or in online co-op with up to eight players, with the multiplayer chaos of watching wobbly physics collide with friends becoming one of the defining draws of the game. Steam Workshop support lets players build and share their own custom levels, lobbies, and character skins using a provided Unity toolkit, giving the game an extensive library of community-made content well beyond the official levels.
The game received mixed critical reviews at launch, with reviewers frequently noting that Human: Fall Flat was often more entertaining to watch than to play alone, while praising its comedic physics animations and character customization. A sequel, Human: Fall Flat 2, was announced in June 2023 and currently has no confirmed release date, published by Devolver Digital rather than Curve Digital.
