NieR: Automata is an action RPG developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix, directed by Yoko Taro with combat design led by PlatinumGames. The game is set in the year 11945 during the 14th Machine War. Humanity has been driven from Earth by machine lifeforms created by an alien force and now survives on the Moon, sending android soldiers back to the surface in an effort to reclaim the planet. Players begin as 2B, a combat android of the YoRHa unit, alongside her scanner partner 9S. The story unravels across multiple narrative routes, with the second and third playthroughs shifting control to different characters and revealing story content and context that fundamentally recontextualizes events seen in earlier runs.
Combat blends hack-and-slash melee with ranged Pod attacks, dodge-based defense, and occasional shifts into bullet hell sequences during certain encounters.
