About Outer Wilds
Outer Wilds is an open-world mystery developed by Mobius Digital and published by Annapurna Interactive. It was released for PC via Epic Games Store and Xbox One on May 28, 2019, and on Steam on June 18, 2020. The game won Game of the Year 2019 from Giant Bomb, Polygon, Eurogamer, and The Guardian, among other outlets.
The game is set in a small, self-contained solar system where the player character is a rookie astronaut on their first unsupervised space expedition. Every 22 minutes, the sun goes supernova and the loop resets. The player wakes up at the beginning again with no items, no weapons, and no mechanical progress. The only thing that carries forward is their own knowledge of what they found and where.
There are no stat upgrades, no gear, and no unlockable abilities. Progress takes the form of understanding. The goal is to piece together the history of the Nomai, an ancient alien civilization whose ruins are scattered across every world in the system, and to find out what caused the loop and whether it can be stopped.
Each planet follows its own set of physical rules and changes in distinct ways over the course of each loop. The solar system is entirely open from the start. Players fly between planets using a ship with physics-based flight and can visit anywhere in the system at any time. What they find, in what order, and what conclusions they draw are entirely their own.
The game approaches its mystery with no hand-holding. There are no objective markers, quest logs, or waypoints pointing to answers. The exploration and the discovery are the experience. An expansion, Echoes of the Eye, was released on September 28, 2021, and is sold separately. Outer Wilds holds a Metacritic score of 85 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.

Every session in Outer Wilds lasts exactly 22 minutes before the sun goes supernova and destroys the solar system. The player then wakes up at the start of a new loop with the world fully reset. Items found, puzzles encountered, and locations visited do not carry over between loops. The player's own knowledge of the solar system does, and this accumulated understanding is the game's only form of progression.
Outer Wilds has no combat, no traditional difficulty curve, and no way to fail permanently. The challenge is entirely exploratory and intellectual. The game does not tell players where to go or what to do, which can be disorienting early on, but patience and curiosity are the primary tools the game asks for rather than reflexes or precision.
