About Planet Zoo

Planet Zoo is a construction and management simulation game developed and published by Frontier Developments, a British studio. It was released on November 5, 2019, for PC via Steam, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions following in 2024. It's the second game in Frontier's Planet series of business simulation titles, following 2016's Planet Coaster, and serves as a spiritual successor to Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2 for players disappointed by the direction of the 2013 Zoo Tycoon reboot.

Every animal in Planet Zoo is simulated as an individual, thinking, feeling creature with its own personality rather than a static asset, and the game builds its entire design philosophy around that idea. Players research and manage each species to help them thrive, craft detailed habitats matching their natural environments, and support breeding across generations, with a Conservation Rating tracking how well a zoo balances animal welfare, education, and the display and release of endangered species back into the wild. The base game includes eleven critically endangered species, including the Bornean orangutan, western lowland gorilla, and West African lion. Cooperative online community challenges centered on conservation goals, like breeding and releasing a set number of animals within a timeframe, reward participants with conservation credits redeemable for new animals outside the usual in-game economy.

Construction uses the same piece-by-piece building system introduced in Planet Coaster, with over a thousand individual pieces spanning walls, roofing, lighting, foliage, and landscaping tools for digging lakes, raising hills, and carving caves. Custom buildings and habitats can be saved as blueprints and shared freely through the Steam Workshop, letting players use community-made creations in their own zoos at no cost. Safari rides, boat tours, trains, monorails, and gondola lifts can all be built to give guests additional ways of viewing the animals throughout a park.

Players can follow a globe-trotting Career campaign covering a series of scenario-based challenges, or build entirely freely in Sandbox mode with unlimited resources. Since launch, Frontier has released a steady stream of regional animal packs, including Arctic, South America, Australia, Southeast Asia, and, more recently, Zookeepers, Americas, and Asia packs, each adding new species, scenery themes, and career scenarios. Planet Zoo holds a Metacritic score of 81 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
