The game is set in a sprawling fictional recreation of the American West, Midwest, and South in 1899, at the close of the outlaw era. Players control Arthur Morgan, an experienced enforcer and loyal member of the Van der Linde gang led by Dutch van der Linde. A botched robbery sends the gang on the run across multiple states, hunted by Pinkerton agents, rival outfits, and federal marshals as the world they have built their lives around contracts around them.

The open world is among the most detailed in the action-adventure genre. An ecosystem of wildlife responds to the time of day, weather, and season. NPC characters follow independent daily routines, react to Arthur's reputation and behavior, and engage in conversations and events separate from the player. An Honor system tracks choices throughout the story, shaping how strangers, lawmen, and the gang respond to Arthur over time.

Core systems include deep horse bonding that improves a horse's performance and responsiveness with time spent together. Hunting requires stalking, tracking, and selecting the right weapon to preserve a carcass for cooking and selling. The gang's camp depends on the player's contributions and upkeep. Crafting, cooking, and a robust weapon maintenance system add further depth to each outing into the wilderness.

Red Dead Online is included with every copy and provides a persistent multiplayer open world set in the same era with its own progression and activities. Red Dead Redemption 2 holds a Metacritic score of 93 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
