About Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 is a third-person survival horror game developed and published by Capcom, directed by Yasuhiro Ampo and Kazunori Kadoi. It was released on March 24, 2023, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, reimagining the original 2005 release with the studio's RE Engine.
Six years after the biological disaster in Raccoon City, special agent Leon S. Kennedy is sent to track down the President's missing daughter, Ashley Graham, to a remote European village. What begins as a rescue mission quickly turns into a fight for survival as Leon discovers the local population has fallen under the control of the cult Los Iluminados, led by the enigmatic Osmund Saddler.
The remake retains the over-the-shoulder third-person perspective that defined the original and helped redefine the survival horror genre, while substantially overhauling combat, enemy AI, and pacing. Resource management remains central to the experience, with players balancing limited ammunition and healing items against escalating waves of infected Ganados, while the inventory system returns in an updated form. The story has been reworked with expanded character development and new narrative beats not present in the 2005 version, alongside fully re-recorded dialogue, including new lines for the fan-favorite Merchant character.
The base game includes the full main campaign as well as Mercenaries Mode (a free DLC). A free PSVR2 mode, letting players experience the campaign from a first-person perspective, was released as free DLC in December 2023. Resident Evil 4 holds a Metacritic score of 91 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.
