With the earth shattered, the flow of rune-based power ceased, and the gods of nature vanished from the land. Mountains crumbled, fields withered, and hope faded among the people of Azuma. Players awaken with amnesia after a dream of dueling dragons, guided by a mysterious voice urging them to accept the power of an Earth Dancer and use it to save the land. Choosing between protagonists Subaru or Kaguya, players investigate the truth behind the Celestial Collapse and a threat known as the Blight while working to restore Azuma to its former glory.
Combat and traversal center on the Earth Dancer's abilities, using dance, sacred treasures, and new weapon types, including the Bow and Talisman, to purify corrupted land, farms, and monsters affected by the Blight. Farming, animal husbandry, cooking, and crafting all return as core systems familiar to longtime Rune Factory fans, but Guardians of Azuma expands the scope beyond individual farm management into full village rebuilding, letting players place farmland, buildings, and decorative items across customizable areas as they restore entire communities rather than just their own homestead.
Social systems return as well, with players building relationships across a cast of characters including twelve possible love interests, alongside their fluffy companion Mocoron. The game received generally positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for its blending of genres and its avoidance of some of the more repetitive chore-based gameplay loops common to the wider farming sim genre.
