Sleeping Dogs is a third-person open-world action-adventure game developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix. It was released on August 14, 2012, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, following a turbulent development history that began at Activision as a project originally pitched as True Crime: Hong Kong before being cancelled in 2011 due to budget and quality concerns. Square Enix acquired the publishing rights later that year, renaming the project and bringing it to completion.
Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-American police officer, returns to Hong Kong to go undercover within the Sun On Yee, one of the city's most powerful and dangerous Triad organizations. As he rises through the ranks and proves himself worthy of trust, Wei is forced to walk a fine line between the loyalties he's building within the gang and the mission he was sent to complete, with the story exploring the psychological toll of living a double life inside organized crime.
Combat leans heavily on hand-to-hand martial arts, using grapples, counters, and environmental attacks in place of straightforward gunplay, alongside driving and parkour-based traversal across a densely detailed recreation of Hong Kong.
