About Split Fiction

Split Fiction is a cooperative action-adventure game developed by Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts under the EA Originals label, directed by Josef Fares. It was released on March 6, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following on June 5, 2025. It is Hazelight's third game and was built by a team of 80 people using Unreal Engine 5. By April 2026, it had sold over seven million copies.

Mio Hudson and Zoe Foster are fiction writers invited by a company called Rader Publishing to test an experimental simulation device. Once connected, the machine begins extracting not just their submitted work but all of their creative memories and unfinished ideas. Mio and Zoe must work together through a series of simulated worlds drawn from their own imaginations to destabilize the system and break free, slowly learning about each other across a story that builds from mutual distrust into genuine friendship.

Mio writes science fiction, and Zoe writes fantasy, and the game alternates between these two genres across its levels, shifting the visual tone, mechanical palette, and enemy types with each transition. One chapter might see the pair escaping a collapsing space station while another drops them into a medieval fantasy kingdom. Within each level, one or more unique gameplay mechanics are introduced and built upon before being retired entirely in the next area, keeping every section fresh. The two characters are given different but complementary abilities within each mechanic, requiring communication and coordination to progress.

Side Stories are optional levels accessible through portals found in each chapter, based on unfinished or abandoned story ideas from Mio's and Zoe's writing. Each side story carries its own one-off mechanic and adds supplementary character context outside of the main narrative. The main campaign runs roughly 12 to 15 hours, with Side Stories adding further playtime for players who seek them out.

The game is exclusively two-player and has no single-player mode. Local split-screen and online co-op are both supported, with full crossplay across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The Friend's Pass allows one purchased copy to cover both players online, with no platform restriction on the second player's platform.

A free trial also allows two players to experience the opening stages without owning the game, with progress carrying over if a purchase is made afterward. Split Fiction is not available on Game Pass, EA Play, or any subscription service. A standalone purchase is the only way to access the full game.
