About Tales of Arise
Tales of Arise is an action role-playing game developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was released on September 10, 2021, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, following a delay from its original 2020 window to allow for additional development time. It's the seventeenth main installment in the Tales series and was built using Unreal Engine 4 rather than the series' traditional in-house engine, marking a significant graphical leap over previous entries. Art direction and character design were handled by Minoru Iwamoto, who previously worked on Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria.
The story is set across two worlds: Dahna, a medieval world under three centuries of oppressive rule, and Rena, an advanced civilization that has subjugated the Dahnan people. Alphen, a slave who has lost his memories and cannot feel pain due to wearing an iron mask, crosses paths with Shionne, a Renan woman cursed so that anyone who touches her suffers intense pain. Bound by fate and a shared goal, the two set out to liberate Dahna from Renan control, recruiting a cast of companions along the way as their journey unfolds.
Combat retains the series' signature Linear Motion Battle System, blending real-time action with strategic positioning, emphasizing evasion and countering more heavily than previous entries, drawing direct inspiration from the widely praised combat of Tales of Graces. A new Boost Strike system lets multiple party members chain together devastating combined attacks under specific conditions, replacing the local co-op character-sharing found in earlier Tales games in favor of deeper character interaction during battle. Outside of combat, the world of Dahna features a day-night cycle affecting the appearance of its varied natural environments, alongside cooking and campfire mechanics that support the party between encounters. Anime cutscenes produced by Ufotable, the studio behind the Demon Slayer series, appear throughout, continuing a tradition established across several prior Tales entries.
Tales of Arise shipped over one million units within its first week, becoming the fastest-selling entry in series history, and surpassed three million units sold by early 2024. A story expansion, Beyond the Dawn, released November 9, 2023, adding roughly 20 hours of new content set one year after the main story's ending. Tales of Arise holds a Metacritic score of 84 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
