About Terraria
Terraria is a 2D action-adventure sandbox game developed and published by Re-Logic. It was first released for Windows via Steam on May 16, 2011, with macOS and Linux support added on August 12, 2015. The game has sold over 70 million copies across all platforms and won the Labor of Love Award at the 2021 Steam Awards, recognizing Re-Logic's commitment to continuous free development over more than a decade.
Players begin in a procedurally generated 2D world with basic tools and must gather resources, craft equipment, build shelter, and fight enemies through an escalating progression system. The world is divided vertically into layers: the surface, underground caverns, the Underworld, and distinct biomes each carrying their own enemies, resources, and rewards. Mining deeper opens access to harder materials and more powerful creatures.
Progression is driven by boss encounters. Each boss defeated opens new crafting tiers, unlocks NPC vendors, and triggers world events. The full game contains over a dozen main boss encounters ranging from accessible early targets to demanding end-game creatures that require extensive preparation. Hundreds of weapons, tools, and armor sets can be crafted, found, or earned through combat across multiple difficulty modes.
Building is fully supported alongside combat, with a wide variety of blocks, furniture, and decorations available for creative play. NPCs move into houses the player builds as the game advances, each providing different services. The game supports both solo and multiplayer through Steam. The free tModLoader companion app on Steam provides full mod support with a large community-made library of content.
The latest update, 1.4.5, was released on January 27, 2026, adding new enemies, weapons, crossover content, and quality-of-life improvements. A sequel, Terraria 2, has been announced by Re-Logic. Terraria holds a Metacritic score of 83 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.

Both games are sandbox games built around exploration and crafting, but they differ significantly in execution. Terraria is a 2D side-scrolling game with a much heavier focus on combat, boss encounters, and gear progression. The world is smaller in scale but far denser in content, with hundreds of enemies, multiple difficulty modes, and an extensive crafting tree. Minecraft is a 3D open world focused more on open-ended building and exploration. Players who enjoy combat progression and deep loot systems tend to favor Terraria; players who prefer freeform 3D construction tend to favor Minecraft.
Yes. Terraria supports online multiplayer through Steam, allowing players to join and host worlds together. Up to seven additional players can join a hosted world alongside the host. Local LAN play is also supported.
Yes. Terraria has full mod support through tModLoader, a free companion app available separately on Steam. tModLoader hosts a large library of community-made mods covering new content, quality-of-life improvements, and full conversion mods that significantly expand or change the game.
Yes. Terraria 2 has been announced by Re-Logic, though no release date has been confirmed. The original game continues to receive content updates in the meantime, with the most recent major update, 1.4.5, released in January 2026.
