The Elder Scrolls Online is a massively multiplayer online RPG developed by ZeniMax Online Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released for PC and Mac on April 4, 2014, following seven years of development, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions arriving in June 2015 and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in June 2021. The game launched with a mandatory monthly subscription model before transitioning to buy-to-play with an optional subscription in March 2015, rebranding as The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited at the same time.
Set roughly 1,000 years before the events of Skyrim, the story unfolds across the continent of Tamriel amid a power struggle between three warring factions, the Aldmeri Dominion, the Daggerfall Covenant, and the Ebonheart Pact, following the fall of the Reman Dynasty. Players create a character from ten playable races and choose from seven classes, including Dragonknight, Sorcerer, Nightblade, Templar, Warden, Necromancer, and Arcanist, each offering distinct skill lines that can be freely combined with different armor types and weapons, giving significant flexibility in how a character is built.
Since February 2018, the base game hasn't been sold as a standalone purchase on Steam. The Standard Edition sold today bundles the base game together with The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind, a major chapter released in 2017 that adds the island of Vvardenfell, the same location featured in the original Elder Scrolls III, set roughly 700 years before that game's events. Morrowind introduces the Warden class, over 30 hours of main story content, a new Trial, and a 4v4v4 Battlegrounds PvP mode, giving new players access to a substantial amount of additional content right from the start.
ESO has no offline single-player mode, though the developers have stated there's plenty of content built for solo play within the always-online world. Player housing, introduced in 2017, spans over 40 house types styled after the game's ten playable races. The game's Champion Points progression system, expanded significantly in a 2021 update, provides long-term character advancement beyond the standard leveling cap.
The Elder Scrolls Online holds a Metacritic score of 71. The Elder Scrolls Online is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass Essential, and Xbox Game Pass Premium.
